2009 Educational Accomplishments

• Collaboration with the Ball State University Jazz Fest
• A six-week All-City Band workshop that features Indianapolis Public Schools’ best students
• Multi-media jazz presentations depicting the history of jazz
• Collaboration in master classes, concerts and artist residencies
• Partnership with Young Audiences will expand our reach to include
other media (painting, sculpture, dance, etc) reinforcing our jazz message.


CURRENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Form and Function
• A workshop where professional jazz musicians work with students in jazz combos.
• Deals with aspects of playing in a combo and their particular roles.

Big Band Basics
• Professional big band musicians helping student big band musicians.
• Covers reading music, dynamics, phrasing, understanding and chord changes for solos

The Business of Music
• A workshop given by A&R executives, club owners, booking agents, and managers
• Covers booking gigs, recording music, and make a living in the music industry.

The Art of Improvisation
• A workshop that deals with improvising in all genres of music (from jazz to rock).
• This workshop is an intensive class that deals with many improvisation devices.

Jazz in the 20th century - performance program
Designed for high school and middle school music students, this program is performed by theIndy Jazz Fest Band which is a seven-piece ensemble comprised of some of the top jazzmusicians in the state. Flanked by two video screens that show footage of jazz legends,this band goes through the history of jazz by performing songs from the early1910’s to modern jazz The Indy Jazz Fest Band is accompanied with narration and dynamic lighting

Impressions - performance program
Designed for elementary school students, this program is also performed by the IndyJazz Fest band. Impressions is very similar to jazz in the 20th century in presentation,however Impressions also demonstrates the fundamentals of music and how it applies to jazz.The performance outlines melody, harmony and rhythm, as the three main aspects of music.dynamics, song form, and Improvisation are discussed as well.
