For example, did you know that Richmond, Indiana is considered to be the birthplace of recorded jazz? From 1916 to 1934, Richmond’s own Gennett Recording Studios recorded the work of jazz musicians of all kinds, including legends like Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, and Jelly Roll Morton. Unlike other recording companies, Gennett worked with both black and white clients, allowing the genre to be pioneered by an authentic, diverse group of talented musicians. By stocking their recordings in the piano stores Gennett’s parent company owned, the studio allowed jazz music to reach new heights of worldwide popularity, ensuring millions of new people had access to the magic of jazz. Though it was only open for two decades, the impact Gennett had on the jazz scene was historic. It’s thanks to them that jazz music is as popular as it is today.
And that’s just the first bit of Indiana jazz history we have for you. Stay tuned, because we'll be rolling out new content regularly, ensuring you're always in the loop about the latest Indy Jazz Fest happenings. Whether you're reading this in the heart of Indianapolis or halfway around the globe, we're excited to embark on this musical journey with you. Get ready to immerse yourself in the rhythms, melodies, and electrifying energy that define the essence of jazz. Let’s make this an unforgettable year!
